Out of Focus

Yesterday was an “unexpected” holiday.  It was a religious occassion (Guru Nanak Jayanti) that is not celebrated in all parts of India, so there were many offices in other cities/states that were fully operational.  Any way, coming so close after the dreaded  “Monday” of the week, it was a welcome and refreshing change.

I woke up late, played with my daughter, took the wife out to lunch, went to the local gym for a few games of badminton in the evening, and retired early after catching a movie at home.  A “good” day, as you can tell… And, something I could get used to!

As I sit contemplating the trade-offs between a fast-track career path and spending quality time at home, I am reminded of an interesting quote I came across, a few days ago:

“Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for – in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day, so you can afford to live in it.” — Ellen Goodman

For some of us (not moi), making it to the Board of a company or buying that Mercedes may be more important than spending time with the little one.  I suppose, it’s all a question of individual priorities, isn’t it?
