Long Live the Whistleblower

4 Dec 2003 : A post on the Emergic blog referred me to a petition on behalf of Satyendra Dubey:

…Satyendranath Dubey who was murdered because he dared blow the whistle on corruption in the mega highway project. He wrote to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and requested anonymity. The PMO disregarded that and on Nov 27th, he was murdered. The conjecture is that the murder was a result of his whistleblowing.

6 Dec 2003 : I became one of the 20,000 signatories to that Online Petition.

11 Dec 2003 : India’s leading daily – Times – carried a story on Dubey, equating him to the freedom fighter Mangal Pandey.

This issue has now become a worldwide movement of sorts. A website – skdubeyfoundation.org – has been setup by one of his batchmates to lead the crusade against the injustice and corruption that led to Dubey’s tragic death:

Satyendra K. Dubey, a 31 year old IIT Kanpur graduate, was the project director at the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and was supervising construction of the Prime Minister’s dream project in the Golden Quadrilateral near Gaya, Bihar. Mr. Dubey had a reputation for being an upright and honest official. Through a letter to the PMO, in which he pleaded confidentiality, Mr. Dubey exposed the corruption at NHAI and blew the whistle on the contract mafia. On November 27, 2003, Mr. Dubey was assassinated by the same corrupt officials and mafia whom he stood up against.

The foundation’s current focus : # Collection of Funds for Dubey Family (Target of Rs. 10 lakh), and # Make sure that the CBI gets a deadline to complete the investigation

Edmund Burke once said : "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing".

For once, I am glad that good men are doing something about it.
