Life Lessons
Seth Godin recently began a series of posts on 1,000 things every school student ought to know before he graduates. Here are some of my favourites :
- How to type.
- How to speak in front of a group.
- How to write clear prose that other people actually want to read.
- How to manage a project.
- The most important lessons from history.
- What the world’s religions have in common.
- The 15,000 most common English words.
- How to handle big changes, with grace.
- Not arithmetic, but algebra.
- The most important lessons from ten other world cultures and their history.
- Speed reading with comprehension.
- How to sell.
You may not agree with all the items on Godin’s list, or even with the order in which they are listed, but you have to admit this is food for thought.
I only wish schools are paying attention.
Education should not be confined to the academic syllabi and must include practical skills as mentioned in the brief list you have published. The foundation that is laid during those formative years can stand these students in good stead in their professional pursuits.Time and again we learn of employers bemoaning the lack of fundamental skills in their recruits who come equipped only with hard skills.More importantly such broad-based education can help in the area of personality development and mould these young minds into confident and aware citizens of civil society.I will read the complete list in leisure..Thank you !
