{"id":486,"date":"2008-10-30T12:49:56","date_gmt":"2008-10-30T07:19:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naveen.bachwani.com\/blog\/?p=486"},"modified":"2008-10-30T12:49:56","modified_gmt":"2008-10-30T07:19:56","slug":"two-earths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naveen.bachwani.com\/greymatter\/2008\/10\/two-earths\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Earths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was browsing through a local financial daily &#8211; LiveMint &#8211; when an interesting headline caught my eye: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.livemint.com\/2008\/10\/31005545\/Two-planets-for-greed.html?h=B\" target=\"_blank\">Two Planets for Greed<\/a>&#8220;, it read.\u00a0 And, here&#8217;s what it had to say&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>According to the latest World Wide Fund for Nature <em>Living Planet Report<\/em>, humanity\u2019s current \u201cecological footprint\u201d\u2014or impact on the earth\u2019s services\u2014exceeds the planet\u2019s regenerative capacity by about 30%. The report adds that if the present scenario prevails, \u201cby the early 2030s we will need two planets to keep up with humanity\u2019s demand for goods and services\u201d.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>India\u2019s footprint, at 2.2 times its biocapacity\u2014the potential of its living resources to supply the demands made by its population\u2014is only marginally lower than China\u2019s, at 2.3 times, but more than the US\u2019, at 1.8 times.
